Focus on Bulls

Filed under: Blog, Featured Suburb Responses: 1 Comment

Bulls (Pop. 1755) is a small town near Palmerston North on the west coast of the North Island about 160 kilometres north of Wellington. Recent marketing makes puns with the name, for example “New Zealand gets its milk from Bulls” (Observers may consider the results “commenda-bull” or “horri-bull”).

The town also has its own website unforgetabull.co.nz which highlights the areas history and community. The site also provides information on local events and has a directory of local businesses.

So check out some of bullish photos that Kerry took on her recent trip there and if you are visiting Bulls I’m sure you will have a unforgettabull time…

    two things……
Back in the 60′s when I lived in Tauranga, my new best friend arrived with his 3 brothers and sisters from a place called Ohakea, I do recall asking where?? But because his Dad was in the Air Force (once upon a time when we had a real one) and had, from memory, retired, they decided to move to Tauranga, and in fact Otumoetai, not far from me when I lived in Oriana Crescent (maybe that’s where the lifelong obsession with being seaside started?) But after only a short time there, when I reached the tender age of 12 we moved local stock & barrel to Nelson, which has been home now for nearly 4 decades.
    And you’re probably wondering….about the 2nd thing….
Well Trevor was a bus driver, can’t remember which coachline, but it was mainly overseas tourists on his coach, anyway, how did he make a couple of extra dollars………?
Well exactly as the writer said, about 1/2hr out of Bulls he would hit the button on the microphone (in his own little way he said it always helped if he had made sure that he had pointed out to the Americans the large amount of cattle in “that” field or the large amount of “Jersey” cows over there while they were heading north.) Anyway the story he told me was of this very very confident “know it all” from a place below Canada. He decided it was a grand time to offer the chap a bet. “I can get milk from Bulls!” he proclaimed to the “below Canada” resident. The person nominated replied “&^%$#@” he continued, “Oh yes I can, I promise.” Somewhere around here the mention of “hundred” was involved. Anyway first stop after going over the bridge the coach pulled over at the Milk Bar (“Dairy”) and the driver got out, by the time he got back in the bus, the chap in question was already at the door, laughing and with a “green note” in his hand. Said Bus Driver didn’t accept this “green note”, but did accept the offer of a “beer” when the bus pulled in at Taupo for the night.
We do have some fun here in Kiwiland, or not?
