About Arch Hill:
The "very alternative" Arch Hill is known to many as "actorsville" - which tells you a lot about the intellectual/artistic flavour of today in this quiet, VERY oldE city-fringe quiet backwater of Auckland. WETA workers and academics are everywhere ! HOW TO GET THERE ? Heading west, just off Great North Road, along from Newton after the K'Rd and Ponsonby Rd junction. Hang a left after Mc Donald's and you will enter another world. A walk around the narrow streets will tell you even more ... dwellings going back to the 1870s and ALL in more or less remarkable condition. Just keep those pit-sawn Kauri boards painted and Aucklanders will live to enjoy them for another 100 years yet ! NO LEAKY BUILDINGS in this hub of the "very alternative" OLDE WORLD AUCKLAND where "atmosphere" just oozes out of every doorway.
Arch Hill Shopping:
Dairy/Superette, Liquor store and coffee shops all within easy reach. Supermarket and Grey Lynn shopping centre are a good 15 minute walk. Ponsonby Road also provides the small-shop experience ... you name it, they have it, from gourmet fads to high fashion ! CBD (to where many residents walk each day for work) takes a fast paced 30 minute walk ... much less, of course, if one chooses to go by bus of which there are plenty heading in and out of the city from pre-dawn to ... whenever. Auckland University and AUT about a 40 minute walk (less for those who are extra fit).
Transport:
As above. Buses to everywhere from Great North Road.
Eating Out:
Ponsonby Road is only a 20 minute walk away. Cafes, bars and fine restaurants galore !
