About the Mt Wellington Community
About Mt Wellington:
Mount Wellington is a 137 metre volcanic peak located in the Auckland volcanic field. It is the youngest onshore volcano of the Auckland volcanic field, having been formed by an eruption around 9,000 years ago. It is the largest of Auckland\'s scoria cones. Because Auckland is a monogenetic volcanic field Mt Wellington is not expected to erupt again.
The suburb surrounding the peak is also called Mount Wellington, and is located 10 kilometres southeast of the city centre. It is surrounded by the suburbs of Tamaki, Panmure, Penrose, and Ellerslie, and by the Tamaki River. State secondary schools serving the area include St Peter\'s College and Selwyn College.
Named by colonists after the Duke of Wellington, the local Māori people called it Maungarei and used it for centuries as a pā or hill fort.
Much of the old lava flow surrounding the mountain is being quarried for industrial aggregates, and the large quarry to the north of the mountain produced 7% of New Zealand\'s roading aggregate. The quarry has now closed and is being redeveloped for housing. The volcanic scoria cone is of the greatest geological and archaeological interest however.
Mt Wellington Shopping:
The local shopping includes the amazing Sylvia Park mall, Countdown, Harvey Norman Centre, and Lunn Avenue shops. Sylvia Park is the largest shopping mall in Auckland. However if you want good old fashioned park-outside shopping, then Panmure is just at the top of Mt Wellington Highway.
Transport:
Trains and buses are both popular forms of public transport in this area. There are several stops along the Mt Wellington Highway which take you into the city by bus(3 stage fare). This takes approximately 40 minutes. Trains leave every 20 minutes weekdays, and take 10 minutes to Britomart Station. There is no park and ride at Sylvia Park.
