About the Panmure Community

Regional Area Information

About Panmure:

Panmure is a predominantly middle-class suburb, located 11 kilometres from Auckland City Centre, close to the western banks of the Tamaki River and the northern shore of the Panmure Basin.

In 1848, families came from Ireland and England on the ship Clifton and established a settlement in Panmure. However, it was only with the explosive growth of suburbia around it after World War II, and better bridges to Pakuranga that Panmure relatively suddenly started to grow significantly, and become a commercial centre.

This growth is expected to accelerate in the next few years with the announcement of the Tamaki Transformation Programme in early 2012. This is NZ's first urban regeneration programme. Tamaki was chosen because it is an area with "significant potential", being close to the Auckland and Manukau central business districts. In addition, it has a young population, a sense of history and community, green spaces, and a near-coastal location.

Also in 2012, the Auckland Council and the New Zealand Government formed the Tamaki Redevelopment Company with the aim of creating a "thriving, attractive, sustainable and self-reliant community through a series of interlinking and complimentary economic, social, urban space and housing projects".

Panmure Shopping:

Queens road is the central street on Panmure, and is usually brimming with activity. There are several small shops, eateries, bank outlets, and a large post-shop.

Sylvia Park, which is currently New Zealand's largest shopping mall, is less than 5 minutes drive away.

Transport:

Panmure is regarded as a major transport hub as it is along several bus routes, and is well supported by the Panmure train station which is adjacent to the famous Panmure roundabout.

Work has commenced on the Panmure section of a major new transport project called AMETI (Auckland-Manukau Eastern Transport Initiative) which aims to improve the connections of eastern Auckland towards the south-east (Manukau City).

As part of this the Panmure train station is currently undergoing a major $17.5 million upgrade, and a new 7 km busway is being built which will link Panmure train station with Pakuranga and Botany. This is expected to cut public transport journey times significantly and relieve congestion on roads. The busway is expected to attract 5.5 million passengers a year.

Eating Out:

Panmure is very well supplied with eateries. In particular, Queens road is home to a wide variety of authentic asian, indian, and middle-eastern restaurants. Many of the chefs and restaurant owners are locals and pride themselves on a sense of community.

A full list of restaurants can be found here:

The adjacent recent additions of the Lunn ave development, and Sylvia Park food outlets are also easily accessible.
