About Great Barrier Island:
Great Barrier Island is a remote, tranquil and untouched paradise 90km north east of central Auckland. Located at the edge of the Hauraki Gulf Great Barrier is one of the most unspoilt places you'll ever find.
From tramping through Native Forest. to sea kayaking around coves and inlets there are endless ways to explore this stunning place. The central hub of the island is Claris where you will find the airport. commercial shopping centre, cafe, grocery store, laundry, dentist, garage and post services. The local school is Kaitoke School.
Great Barrier Island Shopping:
As there are no banks or ATMs on the island it is recommended that you take cash. Eftpos and credit card facilities are available at most commercial outlets. Gereral stores are located at Port Fitzroy, Whangaparapara Reserve, Claris, Pa Beach, and Mulberry Grove Tryphena.
Transport:
Great Barrier Island is a 35 minute flight or a leisurely 2.5 hour ferry ride from Auckland with Fullers. Cars can be taken to Great Barrier on Sealinks Eco Islander ferry which takes approximately 4.5 hours. All ferries to the island arrive at Tryphena. The main airfield on the island is at Claris. Another is at Okiwi in the North, which usually operates from the end of October until the end of April each year. Transfer services and rental vehicles are all readily available. Great Barrier buses operate a daily service between Tryphena and Port Fitzroy all year, as well as scheduled services in the Southern Part of the island.
Eating Out:
Great Barrier offers a good selection of restaurants and cafes. Like most business's on the island, opening hours are seasonal and summertime will provide the best range of eating options. Also the Whangaparapara lodge set in beutiful surroundings, overlooking a wonderful harbour, is a great place for a night out.
