About the Birkenhead Community
About Birkenhead:
As Auckland grew, an estate southeast of Highbury was subdivided into housing sections in 1883, and named Birkenhead after a suburb of Liverpool noted for its elegant, expensive houses and sea views. Soon, large, handsome villas were built for successful professional and businessmen who could now commute by ferry to Auckland.
The opening of the New Zealand Sugar Company’s factory and worker’s village in 1884, substantially increased the district’s population so that Birkenhead Borough was established in 1888.
However, Birkenhead and Northcote remained somewhat remote from the rest of North Shore and Auckland until the Auckland Harbour Bridge was opened in 1959. Properties were then quickly subdivided and the strawberry fields and market gardens made way for the expanding suburb. New residents flooded in to the borough as they discovered the beauties and pleasant ambience of the area, which was then an easy 15 minute drive to Auckland.
Today Birkenhead is a bustling, busy town that has a wide range of properties, from beautiful exclusive villas to modern state of the art homes. Many homes enjoy panoramic views of Auckland City and the harbour. There are many walks including through the bush to Little Shoal Bay and Birkenhead park.
Birkenhead Shopping:
With a large range of shops, Birkenhead is very well serviced. The Countdown supermarket, The Warehouse, DIY stores, art shops, fresh fisheries, butcher shops, clothing stores and many boutique stores provide a compehensive choice for all.
Transport:
Being handy to the Auckland CBD and only a short distance from Takapuna and 'The Bays', Birkenhead is well serviced by Buses and taxi stands. The many picturesque streets are in walking distance to local shops. There is also a great ferry service from Birkenhead Point to the city, leaving every 30 minutes during the morning and evening peak hours and about every hour the rest of the time. A bus meets the ferry and goes up to Highbury.
