About the Cromwell Community

About Cromwell:

Cromwell is located in the Upper Clutha valley, at the Southern end of man-made Lake Dunstan. It is situated between the Lindis and Haast Passes and is a hub for people traveling between the nearby centres of Queenstown, Wanaka and Alexandra.

The original town centre was established in the 1800s and situated on lower ground at the confluence of the Kawarau and Clutha Rivers. The discovery of gold in the 1860’s, brought an influx of miners into the area. However, as gold ran out the role of the town changed to support the growing agriculture and fruit growing industries.

In the early 1990s, one third of the town was re-located to higher ground with the construction of the Clyde Dam and the flooding of Lake Dunstan. Residential areas were expanded and new educational and sports facilities were developed. Core retail, service and civic facilities can be found in the re-located town centre, also known as the ‘Mall’.

Today, Lake Dunstan is a popular venue for water sports and activities. Water skiing, recreational boating, and fishing are all enjoyed on the lake. Vineyards have flourished in the nearby Banockburn valley and the quality of the stone fruit is renowned throughout the country.

The rich history of the area, the variety of activities on offer, and the dramatic setting against the backdrop of Central Otago hills, have helped to put Cromwell on the map as a tourist destination in recent times.

Cromwell Shopping:

Cromwell Mall provides shopping essentials as well as core service and civic facilities. “Old Cromwell town” is a popular tourist destination and with many of the old building restored or reconstructed. Stores sell local crafts and art and refreshments are on offer at the cafe.

Transport:

Daily buses run to and from Queenstown and other areas. Bookings can be made at the Cromwell Information Centre, the Mall. Cromwell Taxis provides taxi services for the area.

Eating Out:

There are a number of restaurants and pubs in and around the mall and some of the hotels or lodges in the area also house restaurants. In addition, many of the Bannockburn vineyards run restaurants where you can enjoy a long lunch amongst the vines.
