About the Nelson Surrounds Community
About Nelson Surrounds:
The Nelson region is well known for having its own microclimate and that's what draws many new residents and thousands of holidaymakers here each year.
What began as an established settlement back in the mid 1840's, has developed into a cosmopolitan town with a vibrant arts/crafts scene. Hundreds of artists and craftspeople call the region home. You can see many of them at the Saturday morning markets.
With many elevated areas close to town there is plenty of opportunity to take in the scenery, or to purchase properties that take advantage of those beautiful sea and mountain views. A trip up to the 'Centre of NZ' is not to be missed and affords great views after a brisk walk.
With 99% of Nelsons population living within 5 kms of the coast, its not surprising that river and water based activities are an integral part of living here.
Nelson Surrounds Shopping:
Both Nelson and Richmond have a varied and mixed shopping scene, with new entrants like Fashion Island alongside traditional shops, which have been in Nelson for decades. There's no shortage of supermarkets, clothing shops, bookstores, shoe shops, etc in Nelson and the Richmond Mall is the biggest in the top of the South Island. There is a smaller shopping centre alongside 2 modern supermarkets in Stoke, a main suburb located halfway between Nelson and Richmond.
Transport:
The last train stopped here in the mid 1950s, but Nelson is now well served by bus. The city has taxis, and tourist buses, like the red London Double Decker bus that operates mainly in Summer months, and many other ways of getting around. There is also a late late bus providing public transport after midnight. Nelson Airport, Airport of the Year in 2008, is the nation's 4th busiest airport and home base to the Air Nelson subsidary of Air NZ. It is only a short drive from the city.

Eating Out:
With a reputation of the highest number of cafes/restaurants/general eateries per capita in NZ, there's something for everyone in Nelson. Choose from waterside eateries to upmarket hotel bistros, Indian curry houses to Thai Food, Turkish to Mexican, Algerian to Japanese. Their locations are just as diverse, from waterfront to riverside, beachside to vineyards, quayside to city street alfressco. It would be hard not to find a style, location or price to suit any budget.
