About the The Brook Community
About The Brook:
Situated to the north east of the The Grampians Reserve, The Brook is also home to the rapidly developing Brook Waimarama Sanctuary.
Located about 1.5-2km from the centre of town many of the homes here skirt the sides of 'The Brook' stream, which runs just about right through the middle of this suburb, travelling for most of its local journey, alongside Brook St. Towards the southern end of the The Brook and 4.5km from the town centre is The Brook Motor Camp, another quite famous Nelson landmark. The site of NZ's first railway, The Dun Mountain Railway, and a popular walk today, can be accessed from the Motor Camp area.
Closer to town many of the homes were built in the 1930s & 1940s, although some are much older too. Towards the southern Motor Camp end, newer subdivisons have been progressively built as land has become available. In these areas many of the homes were only built in the last 5 - 10 years.
The lure of birdsong and running water have been motivating factors for many who choose to reside in this area. As the area is in a valley, any potential resident would be well advised to inspect the property personally so as to ascertain the correct contour and aspect of an individual property.
The Brook Shopping:
Down Brook St near the intersection with Moorhouse Ave is a local neighbourhood dairy. However the town centre is only 1.5-2km away, and there's no shortage of supermarkets, clothing shops, bookstores, shoe shops, etc. there.
Transport:
'The Bus' runs a regular scheduled public bus service to the area, coming from Nile St and heading south into Brook St, going up to the motor camp. It then returns via Brook St, into Westbrook Terrace, then along Seymour Ave, Bronte and back onto Collingwood St. There are 5 scheduled runs per weekday, and 1 on Saturday morning with another 1 on Saturday afternoon.
