About The Wood:
A popular suburb based on it being flat, and close to the city. If you want to be within a short walking distance to the city, then this area would be high on your list.
Many of the established homes are from the 20s and 30s. In the late 1800s a group of Italian tomato growers set up their businesses here. Over the last couple of decades they have successively redeveloped the land that once was home to dozens of large glasshouses. With this and some infilling you can also choose from a selection of many newer homes and townhouses. The Western end boundary is home to Trafalgar Park, the main city sportsground.
The Wood Shopping:
On the corner of Grove and Milton Streets, there's a dairy, the very popular fish & chip "cafe" and the local tavern. On Grove St there is also a small organic grocery. You're just minutes away from Nelson city, which has a varied and mixed shopping scene. You'll find new entrants like Fashion Island alongside traditional shops, which have been in Nelson for decades. There's no shortage of supermarkets, clothing shops, bookstores, shoe shops, etc in the town. And after walking around for an hour or two, there are plenty of places to sit down and enjoy a cuppa.
Transport:
Presently 'The Bus' is the main form of public transport to/from the city. On its route through the area, 'The Bus' travels via Collingwood, Grove, Milton, Troy, Hardy St East & Nile streets on its journey to Nelson.

Locally there are a few takeaway food outlets. However, just a short drive away in Nelson you're spoilt for choice with a wonderful selection of restaurants sure to please all tastes. We have nearly 40 restaurants in Nelson. Choose from Indian, Turkish, Thai, Chinese, Japanese, Italian, Greek, Mexican, Brewery Cafes, specialist seafood, pizzerias, local & regional fare, hotel dining, along with plenty of cafes.
