About the Motueka Community
About Motueka:
Motueka is the second largest town in the Tasman District and is the gateway to Abel Tasman National Park, Kaiteriteri Beach, and Golden Bay. It is also a hub for horticulture and at times during the year the town hosts hundreds of seasonal workers harvesting the variety of fruit crops and hops that flourish in the area.
Motueka enjoyed a boom time in the 1960s as the major tobacco-growing centre in the country. By the 1980s though those days were gone and only through hard work and diversification, has the town returned to prosperity in the 21st century. The fishing industry is also now a major employer in Motueka.
Motueka has a strong arts community and many interesting sculptures and works of art can be viewed just walking up and down the main street.
Nearby Abel Tasman National Park is one of the region's major tourism drawcards. The coastal walking track that follows the golden sands and turquoise waters of the bays and coves is the only one of its kind in New Zealand.
