About the Owaka Community
About Owaka:
The forgotten Coast? New Zealand’s best kept secret? These are two of the titles given to this area on the South east coast of the South Island.
It is certainly an area of great natural beauty which lacks the large crowds of other tourist areas. It is still possible to be the only group on a golden sand beach with a native forest backdrop or a line of rugged cliffs visible in the distance. The inland areas have rivers with good populations of trout and no queues at the pools.
Purakanui Bay is a well-known surfing beach. The Nuggets are a haven for seals, sea lions and yellow-eyed penguins. There are numerous walks, often to one of the local waterfalls. Kaka Point Beach has a surf life-saving patrolled area in summer.
It is still possible to purchase sections with stunning views of beaches at prices that people can afford and there are opportunities for tourist ventures.
In Owaka there is an area school (year 1-13 pupils), which was recently extensively upgraded and boasts modern computer systems and an e-learning suite. In fact, the school offers Avionics throughout New Zealand via e-learning and is the main provider of secondary Avionics courses in New Zealand. There is also a full primary school at Tahakopa.
There are numerous reserves and parking areas adjacent to the attractions. There is supermarket shopping, new museum and a garage in Owaka, with petrol and a dairy/takeaways in Papatowai. Motels, backpackers and cafes are found throughout the area.
Main employment options are farming and rural servicing including a freezing works. Tourist ventures are becoming increasingly important as a source of work.
The area abounds in natural beauty; it offers a very relaxed lifestyle. There is scope to join in with the community or to find solitude. All in all the Catlins is a very agreeable place.
