About the Central City Community

About Central City:

Central City Dunedin, locally known as City Rise, is a dynamic locality bordered by the Town Belt and has a delightful mix of people - particularly those who like to think they are 'non-suburban'.

Typically you have professionals living alongside neighbours of artistic or trade backgrounds. The buildings are predominantly older character structures and are representative of Dunedin's heritage. Many of the homes in City Rise have views over the city to the harbour and most are in walking distance of cafes, restaurants, theatres and cinemas.

The local library is excellent , there are two museums, an Art Gallery, a Chinese Garden, Olveston - an historic house open to the public, Speight's Brewery Tours as well as the local Tourist Centre from where you can access all the city's attractions.

You can just hop on a bus or boat in the city centre to see local marine life or climb aboard a train to visit the spectacular Taieri Gorge. City Rise also offers a wide range of schooling from pre-school through to University and polytechnic. Numerous sporting facilities are located in the city including gyms, rugby fields, cricket pitches and there are tennis clubs within the town belt.

Central City Shopping:

City Rise incorporates Dunedin City's main shopping and business district. World famous for Fashion id, many Dunedin shops and boutiques sell local designers clothes and for the more conservative there are two large department stores stocking a wide range of labels. All major banks are represented in the centre of Dunedin, as well as speciality food stores, a supermarket and a local farmer's market every Saturday morning.

Transport:

Because Dunedin is New Zealand's oldest city, it has a well established infrastructure including a comprehensive bus service and many taxi companies. However, many people walk to town and services. For those who prefer to travel by car there is no shortage of car parks.

Transport Link:

Eating Out:

Beginning at the Octagon and radiating out from there, Dunedin offers a wide range of eating establishments from tapas bars and takeaway eateries to cafes and restaurants - both gourmet and ethnic. It's safe to say that all tastes are catered for. There are many local bars and pubs for those who want a more casual night out.
