About Port Chalmers:

Port Chalmers is the main port of Dunedin. It has a population of approx 3000 and lies 15 kilometres northeast of Dunedin's city centre. Much of Port Chalmers is located on a small hilly peninsula, at the northern end of which is a large reclaimed area which is now the site of Dunedin's container port.

The local museum, library, public swimming pool, bowling club, rugby club and walking tracks are all within easy reach of the main street.

Most of the port's economic activity centres on the container terminal. Fishing which was once the main stay of the area but is now only a small part of the economy. The creative arts are also important to the town's economy; Port Chalmers, Roseneath, Sawyers Bay and Careys Bay have a thriving arts community.

Port Chalmers Shopping:

Port Chalmers shopping centre offers a selection of Art Galleries, cafes, restaurants, hotels, jewellery shops, giftware and a recently refurbished New World supermarket. There is a Medical Centre, Chemist, Hairdressers, Fresh fish shop and hardware store.

Transport:

There is a public bus service which runs daily. There is also ample parking and taxi's available in the area.

Eating Out:

There are some great eating spots including cafe's, pub's and restaurants with many specialising in the fresh local produce, and daily sea food catch on offer.
