About the Hawera Community
About Hawera:
Hawera is the largest of several South Taranaki towns that developed to support the surrounding farm blocks and has a rich cultural history. Original blockhouses, monuments and well preserved pa sites tell of early Maori life and the Maori-European land wars.
The town is situated on State Highway 45 - known as Surf Highway 45 due to the numerous surf beaches located along the coastline - with the mighty Mount Taranaki at its backdoor. Hawera is also home to the largest dairy factory complex in the Southern Hemisphere, which has had a huge influence on this town.
Major attractions are: King Edward park with special features including the wendy statue, willow pattern chinese garden and spectacular rose garden, the Aquatic Centre, which has an Olympic sized 50 metre pool and is currently adding hydro slides, Tawhiti Museum - widely acclaimed as the best private museum in the country - which focuses on the impressive history of South Taranaki, with lifesize figures and three dimensional images of our past and the Elvis Presley Memorial Record Room, which is privately owned and displays 50s and 60s Elvis record and memorabilia museum.
If you're feeling energetic, climb the water tower, which was completed in 1914 and has a colourful history. There is also a cinema in town, which has two modern theatres screening the latest releases on a daily basis.
Hawera Shopping:
The modern Hawera Town Square has certainly changed the face of shopping over recent years, with a modern atmosphere and plenty of seating. Hawera offers a variety of supermarkets, banks and retail stores within walking distance to surrounding residential areas.
