About the Te Awamutu Community
About Te Awamutu:
TE AWAMUTU – “The River’s End”,
is situated in the Waikato region. The urban population is approximately 14,000 (Statistics NZ Census 2006). However, small neighbouring towns and the large farming community use its ample facilities.
Te Awamutu is located some 30 km south of Hamilton on State Highway 3, one of the two main routes south from Auckland and Hamilton. The town is on gently undulating land close to the banks of a tributary of the Waipa River.
Te Awamutu was a major site during the New Zealand land wars of the 19th century, serving as a garrison town for the colonial settlers.
The town's best known sons are the Finn brothers, Tim and Neil, whose musical careers have stretched from Split Enz through the internationally successful Crowded House to their current solo and collaborative works.
The main thoroughfare is Alexandra Street, so named because it was once the main road to the town of Alexandra (since renamed to Pirongia, to avoid confusion with the town of Alexandra in the South Island).
The small towns of Kihikihi (5 kilometres to the south) and Pirongia (12 kilometres to the west) are close neighbours of Te Awamutu. Other towns surrounding Te Awamutu include Cambridge, 25 kilometres to the northeast, Otorohanga, 30 kilometres to the southwest, and Raglan 50 kilometres to the northwest.
There are lots of things to see and do in and around Te Awamutu; for more details folow this link: http://www.barclaysrealestate.co.nz/linksta.php?height=440&width=400
Te Awamutu Shopping:
The town has many and varied shops, making onerous trips to "the city" unnecessary. Besides the many restaurants and cafes, there are major bank branches on or near to the main thoroughfare, Alexandra Street. For day to day shopping, both Wooworths and Fresh Choice are available. However, the Pak'n'Save chain should be opening a new store, offering another choice for shoppers and bringing more trade to Te Awamutu.
