About the Eastbourne Community

About Eastbourne:

With the bush at their backs, and the sea at their feet, Eastbourne and Bays residents enjoy sheltered swimming beaches, boating facilities and some of the finest bush tracks in Wellington.

Eastbourne is located on the eastern side of Wellington harbour, stretching from Point Howard south to Point Arthur (Butterfly Creek). It is also home to New Zealand's first permanent lighthouse at Pencarrow, which marks the entrance to Wellington Harbour.

From the turn of the century, the Eastbourne area has been a popular destination for picnics and tramping. It was not unusual in the early 1900's to see the Sunday Wellington to Eastbourne ferry steaming towards Eastbourne packed with day trippers. Gradually the holiday batches evolved into permanent residences and the township grew.

Eastbourne's coastline, which is dotted with bays, contains a number of very small but distinct settlements all of which add to Eastbourne's unique village character.

This exclusive suburb comprises of a variety of exciting architecture, from stunning beach front properties, to modest family homes and townhouses.

The tight-knit community benefits from an excellent Ferry and Bus service, with a thriving shopping centre and excellent schooling on offer; all of which make this one of the most desirable suburbs in Wellington.

Eastbourne Shopping:

Rimu Street, Eastbourne's shopping centre, boasts a number of cafes, beautiful antique and gift shops, a fruit shop and home made gelato, plus much, much more.

Transport:

The East by West Ferry takes City commuters to and from Wellington each day, but if boats aren't for you don't dispear! There is a bus link and its also only a short drive to central Lower Hutt.
